About Coconut Grove Crisis Food Pantry

Jo Jo Green Queen's Columns

At Coconut Grove Crisis Food Pantry, our mission is to improve the lives of those in need by providing essentials and support to our community.

But we also have fun talking to each other and sharing ideas.  The type of person that volunteers at the Pantry is one that is concerned about all of our neighbors and that sometimes leads to discussions of composting, recycling, and sustainability, not to mention how to make great shakes, cook the perfect hamburger, and what movie to see this week!

Get inspired by Joanne, also known as JO JO Green Queen, as she shares her tips and actions..

Your Toilet Paper Choice Means More than You Might Think*

Your Toilet Paper Choice Means More than You Might Think*

Oh, really? You ask. Yup! In addition to having an impact on the air we breathe, the tissue you use can help save water, forests, birds, wildlife and people. Gee, that sounds like most of the planet!  Bamboo toilet paper is therefore something to consider.

The fluffy toilet tissue stocked in our supermarkets requires pulp containing long wood fibers found only in virgin timber (from live

trees). When you use premium tissue, you flush down the toilet part of a tree that may have been felled solely for that purpose. And that tree may have been harvested from a forest,

where our songbirds breed.

And now some numbers:

  • 42 million--tons of toilet paper a year globally
  • 127 rolls of paper per person!
  • 1 million trees cut down daily to make traditional toilet paper.

But won’t bamboo toilet paper feel like sandpaper on my bum? I’m here to report that it passed the test with my very picky husband. But I had to try several brands before he gave the thumbs up.

A few bonuses:

  • manufacturing/shipping is carbon neutral
  • the paper wrappers look great in the cupboard or basket
  • one shipment of 48 rolls lasts us (a party of two) about a year

Give it a try and pass the word.

You’ll not soon forget the name of the brand I use- Who Gives a Crap!

But there are now plenty of brands and lots of reviews.   Simply google "bamboo toilet paper".

Federation.

A box slightly larger than a tissue box gets me through a year and a half of laundry (2-person household). I don't have to remember to buy detergent and lug it from the store. But most importantly, these strips:

  • get the job done without the micro-plastics that linger from detergent pods
  • cut down on greenhouse gas emissions produced by trucks transporting heavy detergent bottles
  • lesson the water footprint of plastic, which equals about 28 gallons of water per pound of plastic produced
  • help reduce the 645 billion plastic household product containers dumped in landfills and oceans globally each year

I'm starting to see the 32-load envelopes of TurEarth in Publix, but if you want to find it and forget it, order a box online. I use TruEarth, but there are more brands popping up all the time. They just haven't yet hit stores in a big way.

Good Housekeeping tested 2o brands and listed their top five as:

  • Best Overall: EC 30 Laundry Swatches
  • Best Value: Clearalif
  • Best for Travel: Norwex
  • Best Scented: Grove Co.
  • Best Unscented: Beyond

As the folks at Truearth are fond of saying, "Small hinges can swing big doors." Let's do this!
